Long recently graduated with an MPS degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2024. As an architectural designer, he chose this program for its multidisciplinary focus on Arts, Science, and Technology. Long believes that architects, by nature, are generalists, and it is imperative to have a wide range of applicable research interests.
Long spent three years as an undergrad at Pratt Institute in the Bachelor of Architecture program, after having transferred from the Astrophysics program at the University of Arizona. It is this duality in educational background that provides Long with an interest in the multidisciplinary and the experimental. At the University of Arizona, he studied advanced astronomy, math, physics and contributed to the code of several programs that monitored and calculated the orbits of celestial objects. Long applied this rigorous scientific method to his education at Pratt Institute where he conducted research and experimented with different forms as well as materials in his projects. Conversely this more art-focused education has transformed his design approach from the technical, generative and parametric to a more gentle and poetic manner, while maintaining thoughtfulness and empirical precision.
Professionally, Long obtained his real world experience interning at CannonDesign during his education and Colkitt Architecture after graduation, for 1 summer and 2.5 years respectively. He is also currently pursuing his Architect license in the state of New York. Although already a practicing professional, Long still keeps in touch with his academic roots by participating in the final reviews of students’ projects by invitations from his past instructors.
