2 LIZARDS
Meriem Bennani & Orian Barki | Whitney Museum
Week 01 | 01/26/2023
The footprints of the lizard guide the audiences to the room next to the Whitney Cafe on the first floor. The color of the footprint sticker is not too bright and has a relatively low contrast to the floor, which is a subtle design. Highlighting the footprints might make some interesting difference.
I was physically in New York City during that period and personally experienced some of the themes in the episodes, the short film directly brought me back some memories in 2020.
The first 2 months of the lockdown felt strange, basically everything closed in a sudden after a few announcements from the authorities. No one had access to the theaters, gyms, museums, etc. I had a car back then so I was able to drive around and see how the city had become. It was sad to see such an empty New York City, compared to a noisy Christmas season in winter 2019 which just happened a few months back.
I was moving from Brooklyn to Manhattan in June 2020 so I drove between two apartments back and forth a lot of times. I witnessed some protests on the street and honked many times to support the protesters. The memories are still fresh and I was totally touched by how brave people can be in order to defend justice.
There were some bad moments, for example when the looters tried to break the window and illegally pick up items from the stores. I worked in the commercial architecture field and our client had to cover the storefront window with wood panels. This should not happen at all, in my opinion.
I had never experienced something like the first half of 2020 and I hope no one will ever need to go through that again. I think this 8-episode series is quite successful, which allows the audiences to look back to those months in a less tragic way, but still being reminded of what happened back then.
