Observation
We found the water bottle filling station an interesting target to analyze. Most faculties and students carry their own water bottle and the water station is one of the must-go places for everyday activities on the floor. There are two stations on the 4th floor and each is next to the all-gender restrooms in the hallway.
The water bottle filling station has its own sensor and once the sensor is blocked by a bottle, it starts pouring water. There is a screen showing the number of 20 oz. plastic water bottles saved from waste by using refillable bottles at the bottle filling station. There is an NSF certified filter in the station to clean and purify the water.
Research
Based on the experiences from our group, here are a few common issues:
The water station is advertised as “Sanitary no-touch sensor activation with automatic 20-second shut-off timer”. However, in our experience it is often unreliable and unpredictable as to when the water stops.
The water station doesn’t seem reliable in terms of fill-capacity.
It’s unpredictable how much it will fill, and sometimes it overflows.
Sometimes it takes the machine a bit long to respond when a bottle is placed.
The numbers of plastic water bottles saved per use, especially when extra large, lose their meaning and direct connection to the person.
The speed at which the water comes out is unpredictable (we have two on the floor, and each works in their own manner).
Some public comments for the product from the website:
“The existing bottle filler lasted about 3 yrs., had to replace a sensor in that period once and now it is non functioning again. It is a very popular item in the school building. We would like to have more in the buildings but they are far too expensive. $800 for just a replacement bottle filler not including the cooler itself.”
“We have this in our dressing room at the theatre and it just isn't sufficient for our 12 person cast. If the whole cast tries to fill up their bottles, the machine doesn't dispense anymore and you have to wait quite a while for it to dispense water again. How much water is supposed to dispense because it's called a "Bottle filling station" but those bottles have to be very small it seems.”
“We added this to the girls kitchen at a sorority house and they love it!
“Very cool. Haven’t had a chance to install it yet but it's a very nice piece.”
“Affordable option over the recessed kind. I love it because it encourages reusable water bottles!”
“Great tasting cold water”
Ideation
It would be great if the station is able to tell what type of bottle the user is placing on the deck and how much water can the bottle hold. In this case, each bottle can get just the right amount of water before being overfilled.
“Hey Agua” is an interactive built-in AI system, which delights your water-filling experience. The way “Hey Agua” interact with it users is that it tells some cute whimsical things the users can carry on, if they choose to interact with the system:
Hey Agua, tell me a joke;
Hey Agua, play me a song;
Hey Agua, tell me a story;
Hey Agua, tell me a fortune;
Hey Agua, give me a ‘ tip of the day’
